Sequencing and genome analysis of the
Leishmania
major Friedlin genome is being
undertaken in the Myler lab in collaboration with
Welcome Trust Sanger Institute,
Focruz, and the
Euleish Consortium
Leishmaniasis
is a parasitic disease transmitted by the bite of a sand fly that is infected
with Leishmania parasites. Currently 350 million people in 88 countries around
the world are threatened and 12 million people are believed to be affected by
leishmaniasis. Of the 1.5 – 2 million new cases of leishmaniasis estimated to
occur annually, most occur in the tropics and subtropics.
There are several different forms of
Leishmaniasis. The most common forms are
cutaneous leishmaniasis, which causes skin sores, and
visceral, which affects some of the internal organs of the body (for example,
spleen, liver, bone marrow).
Our lab is
involved in genome sequencing of the parasite, which should be completed within
the next few months. This work is being carried out in collaboration with
Welcome Trust Sanger Institute and
GeneDB Leishmania Database.
Leishmaniasis
(kala azar)
Leishmania spp
are single cell parasites that are transmitted by the bite of the sand
fly. Diagnosed cases of
Leishmaniasis (kala azar) are
increasing and progression of the disease depends on the strain of
Leishmania the patient is infected with. Symptoms can
range from painful subcutaneous sores to death. The increase of drug resistant
infections and the relative lack of diagnostics has led the
World Health Organization to
label
Leishmaniasis as an emerging disease. Plesae see
WHO Fact Sheet on Leishmaniasis.
Our Mission
As part of the
Leishmania Genome NetworkLeishmania
Genome Network, to sequence, annotate and analyze genomic data from Leishmania
to enhance the research on these important pathogenic parasites.
